GAI-101: ChatGPT Basic Prompting for Beginners

By the end of this AI workshop, participants will:

• Understand the underlying principles of how ChatGPT interprets and responds to prompts.
• Be able to craft effective prompts for a wide range of use cases.
• Have experience applying advanced prompting techniques such as system instructions and role-playing.
• Be proficient in debugging prompts and refining them for better results.

• To introduce participants to the basics of ChatGPT, including its capabilities and limitations.
• To provide participants with a strong understanding of the basics and advanced techniques of prompting ChatGPT.
• To give participants hands-on experience with crafting effective prompts in a variety of scenarios.
• To equip participants with strategies for troubleshooting and refining prompts when they don't produce the desired results.

• Basic computer skills and internet literacy.
• Familiarity with the concept of artificial intelligence is advantageous but not mandatory.
• No previous experience with ChatGPT or any other AI models is required.

Anyone with basic understanding of AI, either technical or non-technical background.

Module 1:    Introduction to the Workshop

• Welcome and introductions, course objectives, agenda for the day, and housekeeping notes.

 

Module 2:    Overview of ChatGPT

• Explanation of AI and language models, what ChatGPT is, how it works, and how it interacts with prompts. Understanding the capabilities and limitations of ChatGPT.

 

Module 3:    Basics of Prompting

• An overview of what prompts are and how they guide the output of ChatGPT. Explanation of key principles in creating effective prompts, including clarity, specificity, and tone.

 

Module 4:    Hands-on Session: Crafting Prompts

• Participants will create and refine prompts for various scenarios. Participants will share their prompts for feedback and discussion.

 

Module 5:    Exploring Prompting Techniques

• Exploration of a few techniques for prompting, including the use of system instructions (guiding the AI's behavior with specific instructions), and role-playing methods (pretending the AI is a specific character or professional).

 

Module 6:    Debugging Prompts

• Discussion on common issues with prompts, how to troubleshoot prompts that aren't providing the expected output, and hands-on exercises to refine and improve prompts.
